The faculty comprises the following departments:

The faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology is one of the oldest in the University. It was originally founded as a teacher`s institute of foreign languages in 1938. In 1941 the institute integrated into the structure of Ivanovo Pedagogical Institute as a faculty of foreign languages, then in 1974 it was transformed into the faculty of Romance - Germanic Philology.

 Nowadays research and teaching work is carried out at the department of English philology (professor O.M. Karpova), German philology (associate professor N.D. Milovskaya), Romance philology and Latin language (associate professor V.M. Debov), and foreign literature (professor A.N. Taganov). 

Since 1998 the full-time faculty is augmented by a new program which draws graduates and students of science faculties who can obtain an additional qualification of an Interpreter in the field of professional communication. The highly qualified staff carries out teaching and research on the most significant aspects of contemporary philological and linguistic science. 

The educational program offers a possibility for students to consolidate their practical skills in the class work and independently. Students profit by the sources of the Foreign Languages Library that has no less than 70 000 volumes and other materials for the purpose of teaching, research and study. Also the faculty disposes of a language laboratory, an audio-visual center and multimedia room. Graduate courses permit to conduct research work on a broad spectrum of subjects. The faculty enjoys a considerable reputation in Russian and international research community. 

The faculty is continuing to build up networks abroad through cooperation with distinguished institutions in Germany, France, Norway, Finland, USA, Denmark, with the Institute of Lexicology of Netherlands , German Cultural Center of Gethe, Center of Lexicology of University of Exeter. 

The faculty offers the students excellent supervision and optimal conditions for studying, trains specialists possessing strong theoretical and practical skills that makes them immediately employable.

2007

  • April 1: The Open Doors Day was held at the Ivteks Culture Center – an event of IvSU presentation meant for future applicants for admission. Our department was represented by academic dean A. Taganov, acting vice-head of the department K. Denisov, and this year’s head of admissions A. Grigoryan, who introduced the department to the audience and answered their numerous questions. 2nd year students of the English department performed their amateur stage production and shared their learning experiences with the audience; department professors tested the knowledge of those willing and gave recommendations.

    Our prospective students and their parents came from Kineshma, Kovrov, Yuzha, Furmanov, Volgorechensk, Loukh, Zavolzhsk, Yaroslavl, and Ivanovo (Schools 44, 5, 53, 32, 7, 36, 22, 41, 30, 67, 66, and 35). The responsible department member was N. Koustova.

  • March 22: 2nd year students guided and inspired by N. Koustova and G. Vishnevskaya, English professors, held another – 18th – Limerick Party. First time during its history, the contestants did not get prizes in terms of places but the teams were recognized as Most Artistic Group, Best Singers, Most Dramatic Performers, etc. Everybody enjoyed the presentations, which celebrated limericks as only our students can.

  • January 17, 2007: the Department of the English philology and of ESP held an English Language Olympiad for Ivanovo oblast. Participating were 29 high school (under)graduates, many were accompanied by their teachers. They came from 27 schools of the area and competed for best knowledge of English in the following nominations:

    • Reading
    • Writing
    • Speaking
    • Listening Comprehension
    • English in use.

    Top results are as follows:
    1) Dmitriy Zoubko (Ivanovo School 33) – 76.1%;
    2) Yana Sharenko (Ivanovo School 30) – 73.5%;
    3) Yekaterina Solovieva (The Harmony Lyceum, Ivanovo) – 73.5% (hors concours);
    4) Yegor Yevdokimov (Ivanovo School 36) – 70.8%
    5) Yekaterina Kravchenko (Novo-Talitsy School) – 70.8%.

2006

  • September 12-14, 2007: VII-th International School On Lexicography “Modern Lexicography: Global Problems and National Solutions”
    Keynote speakers: Prof., Dr. Janet DeCesaris (University Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain), Prof., Dr. Giovanni Iamartino (Milan University, Italy), Prof., Dr. Christer Lauren (Vaasa University, Finland).
    Sessions and round table discussions will be devoted to but not limited by: International and National Features in Lexicography; Historical and Scholarly Lexicography;Terminology and Terminography; New Trends in Dictionary-Making Process.
    Working languages are Russian and English.

  • November 16-17: another professional development seminar was given by Sally Barrett, an English Office Fellow (with the U.S. Embassy in Moscow), who conducted several sessions for students, post-grads, and faculty of the English Philology Department and the ESP Department. The classes were exceptionally interesting and helpful.

  • September 1: first day of school. Congratulations to all, specifically to our 1st year students – welcome, we are happy to see you!

  • Summer news. Second half of July became a busy time for some of the students, post-grads and instructors of the department as they participated in a mission project together with US volunteers and worked on grooming the patio of Ivanovo oblast oncocenter. Our partners in work were teachers and students from the Department of Biology and Chemistry who advised on what to do and how and actually worked with us. Thanks to all volunteers!

  • October 19-21: The “Human Being and Language in Multicultural World” international scientific conference, which took place at Vladimir State Pedagogical University (VSPU) on October 19-21, 2006, brought together participants from numerous regions of Russia and from other countries and gave scholars an opportunity to present the results of their research in linguistics, cross-cultural communication, language teaching and learning.
    The conference was opened by a welcoming speech of VSPU Vice-Rector Prof. Viktor T. Malygin, followed by a plenary session and series of presentations on major issues and tendencies in modern language science. The main linguistic schools of Ivanovo State University and its English Philology Department were represented by Professors Olga M. Karpova, Galina M. Vishnevskaya, Faina I. Kartashkova and their followers. Their presentations were devoted to but not limited by important issues in lexicography, phonetics, and non-verbal communication. The works of Ivanovo scholars attracted great interest of the scientific community. The conference materials were published in a two-volume collection.

  • November 17: Congratulations to all: it's the International Students' Day today! The celebration will be held within the Merry Land Club session at 3.00 pm (Room 280): expected is the performance of our 4th year students. Everybody willing to attend is welcome!

  • November 7: Our graduate students finished their school and pre-diploma practicum and started their regular classes. Welcome back and good luck during your last year at the University!

  • September 26: classes started at our evening department: Translation for Professional Communication. The total number of students this year is 128. Now - under new management: for the coming three years, the head of the department is Yu.Kokounova, senior lecturer, PhD (kandidat nauk).

  • September 15: the department member - Ashot A. Grigoryan - successfully defended his doctoral thesis. Congratulations!

  • September 12-14:the University with its English philology department as the driving force successfully held the VIth International School-Seminar "Lexis, Lexicography, Terminography in Russian, American, and Other Cultures".
    Scholars from 6 countries participated in the conference: Russia, Great Britain, Germany, Israel, Serbia, USA.
    32 Russian cities were represented: Belgorod, Bratsk, Vladimir, Volgograd, Grodno, Dubna, Ivanovo, Kazan, Kemerovo, Kolomna, Kostroma, Krasnodar, Moscow, Murmansk, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Orel, Perm, Pyatigorsk, Rostov-on-Don, Ryazan, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Stavropol, Tambov, Tver, Tomsk, Tula, Tyumen, Shuya, Yaroslavl.
    Total number of participants: over 130, among them were 90 PhDs (doktor nauk - 30 and kandidat nauk - 60), 28 post-graduate students. Among the listeners and support staff were numerous undergraduate and graduate students of the English philology department.

  • To all students and colleagues: welcome back and happy new school year!
    The department personnel was pleasantly surprised to start the new school year at our newly redecorated room with all new furniture. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the President of the University and to all those thanks to whom the rehabilitation has become possible.
